Finding a job: reentry edition

Here are a few tips for securing a job after being released from prison:

Develop a resume: Develop a resume that highlights your skills, experience, and education. Be sure to include any job training or education you received while in prison.

Utilize resources for people in reentry: Many cities and towns have organizations that provide resources and support for people in reentry, including job training and job placement assistance. Fresh Coast Alliance has an employment specialist and we partner with  Goodwill, Michigan Works, and felon-friendly employers.

Network and reach out to contacts: Consider reaching out to friends, family members, or former coworkers to ask for help, advice, or contacts. You can also attend job fairs.

Develop a positive online presence: Employers often search online for information about potential candidates. Make sure your social media profiles (if you are allowed to have one) reflect a positive image and remove any inappropriate content. You can also create a professional online presence by building a LinkedIn profile highlighting your skills and achievements.

Be honest and open about your background: It's important to be honest about your background and to address any questions or concerns an employer may have. Many employers are willing to give people in reentry a chance, and being upfront and honest can help build trust and establish credibility.

It may take some time and effort to find a job after being released from prison, but there are many resources and support systems available to help you on your journey.
