How do I find a therapist?
Finding a therapist can feel like a daunting task, but there are a few resources you can use to help you find a therapist that is a good fit for you.
Ask for recommendations from your primary care doctor or any other healthcare professional you trust. They may be able to provide you with a list of therapists who they know and trust.
Check your insurance plan's website or call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card to see what mental health providers are covered by your plan.
Use online therapist directories. Several online directories list therapists by location and area of specialty.
When you've narrowed down your list of potential therapists, here are some things to consider before making an appointment:
Therapist's qualifications, education, and license information
Cost and whether the therapist is in-network or out-of-network for your insurance plan
The therapist's approach or theoretical orientation
Reviews and feedback from other patients
It's also important to remember that it's okay to shop around and interview a few therapists before you decide which one to work with. It's important to find someone you feel comfortable with and trust.
Once you've decided on a therapist, you can schedule an initial appointment to discuss your concerns and goals. It is also a good idea to talk to the therapist about the type of therapy they practice, so you can understand what to expect during your treatment.
