How to make friends now that I am sober?

Finding friends and cultivating relationships that support and protect your sobriety can be challenging. Many individuals on their recovery journey struggle to build healthy relationships with new people. Here are a few tips for making friends as you work on your recovery and sobriety:

Attend support groups and meetings: One of the easiest ways to meet people in recovery is to attend support groups and meetings, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA). These meetings provide a safe and supportive environment where you can connect with others who are also working on their recovery.

Participate in sober activities and events: Look for sober events and activities in your community, such as outdoor adventure groups, book clubs, or volunteer opportunities. These can be great places to meet people who share your values and goals.

Seek out sober friends and mentors: It can be helpful to surround yourself with supportive, sober friends who can provide guidance and encouragement as you navigate your recovery journey. You can ask your treatment center or support group for recommendations, or reach out to friends and family members who may be able to introduce you to people in recovery.

Build connections with people who have similar interests: Look for ways to connect with people who have similar interests and hobbies, whether through classes, clubs, or community groups. This can be a great way to form lasting friendships with people who share your passions and values.

Practice being open and vulnerable: Building friendships often requires being open and vulnerable, which can be challenging for people in recovery who may have relied on drugs or alcohol to cope with their emotions in the past. Practice being open and honest with others, and be willing to share your experiences and feelings with others. This can help you build deeper, more meaningful connections with others.
